Man is a social animal, as Aristotle once said. This want and need to belong and be accepted by others is what drives us to be civil toward others. In fact, there might be times when we want nothing but to see our intimidators get run over by a bus (yikes!) but we choose to endure the pressure and react in an amiable manner in order to merit niceties, as well. In order to achieve this kind of response from everyone we meet, we must strive to be likeable.
Now, likeability does not always entail that people will throw a party every time you come into the room. A person can be likeable yet not grandstanding. You don’t really have to be popular to be one. All you need to do is adjust your attitude and outlook in life toward the positive. When you feel good about yourself and always look at the bright side of things, your likeability factor will naturally rise.
Here are five ways to become more likeable in any situation.
1) Think happy thoughts
According to Peter Pan, think happy thoughts and you will fly. This applies to your attitude toward the challenges that come your way. For instance, if you received low marks for your exam, don’t think of it as the end of the world. Instead, be grateful it happened because it will motivate you to study harder and manage your time better next time. Behind every dark cloud is a silver lining. If you keep this as your mantra, you will never have to harbor depressing thoughts ever again.
2) Contribute something
Whether its a group project or a personal endeavor, contributing something of value, no matter how small makes a big difference. If you compare a person who always mutters about how difficult a task is and a person who acknowledges the difficulty but tries to lighten the mood by finding humor in the activity, you’d want to go with the latter, right? If you want to be likeable, don’t put others down and bear more weight on a challenging activity.
3) Rein your insecurities in
There is none more annoying than a person who throws a pity party for himself or herself. Examples of insecure people are those who always have to be right at everything, those who always say ‘just kidding’ at the end of every comment, and those who do not know how to laugh at themselves and their mistakes. An insecure person is a crab. A crab is animal that brings everybody down when he or she is down. If you want to have more friends, don’t be one. You don’t have to apologize for everything you say with ‘just kidding.’
4) Believe in what you are saying and stick to it
A person who keeps changing his or her opinion or merely mimics what other people are saying about a particular event or object not only has zero personality but a very low likeability rate, as well. You don’t need to have an opinion about everything — that would be equally annoying, but you don’t need to say ‘yes’ to what others say either. You’ll only end up looking like a desperate sycophant.
5) Avoid judging others
Finally, if you don’t want to be judged, don’t judge. First impressions might sometimes put you off but it pays to know the other person better than to immediately make conclusions about his or her character. Judgmental people, if you notice, are the ones who usually eat alone at the cafeteria because his or her colleagues are tired of hearing him or her point out the flaws of others. Surely you don’t want to be this person.

Neuroplasticity does recognize that when a part or an area of the brain is damaged, the other properly functioning areas can be trained to gallantly take up the job. Over the years, research and studies have proved that the brain can undergo a substantial amount of training to do some of the job the damaged and impaired areas cannot perform. Compensating for the loss of certain areas makes this characteristic of the brain beneficial to patients who have been stricken with stroke or suffer from acute depression.
Some years ago a therapist in gerontology was amazed to see the remarkable way the brain could rewire itself. After many sessions of therapy, a stroke victim, despite his age could lift her paralyzed arm to gently hit a balloon. She was chronically paralyzed, but the other areas of her brain managed to take off from the non-functional areas after they ceased them operating.
In the event of newer challenges and obstacles, the brain is equipped to change and adapt the neural structure if enough stimulation is provided. It helps stroke patients and those stricken with long bouts of depression to even pick up new skills. Therapy works wonders for their impaired condition.
Both the authors, the Time’s science editor and Jeffrey Schwatrz, professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, have mentioned in their book about the power of neuroplasticity and that our brain activity is not set in stone. Their book was based on a study of patients stricken with obsessive compulsive disorders and how their brains were amenable to changes and the shifting of gears for newer activities that are acceptable socially.
The brain’s neural circuit can undergo changes in victims of stroke and depression and make them perform activities that were near impossible during the early stages of obsessive compulsive disorders. Studies have proved that given a new task to perform, neural circuitry doesn’t fail in its job after sessions of behavioral therapy that effect the required chemical changes.
Studies by scientists have proved that medication does not succeed in ultimately reviving or getting the brain to act in cases of stoke and depression. Drugs and anti-depressants usually prescribed by psychiatrists are not a one-size-fit-all type. It is hotly debated whether they fit at all as most doctors change the medicine as soon as it stops providing relief. Either they change or combine the drugs as is the norm of the American Psychiatric Association. Recent findings have also shown that drugs don’t work on 30% of the population. If it worked, then the number of suicide deaths of teenagers on medication wouldn’t be taking place.
Compared to drugs and medication, cognitive therapy, based on behavioral patterns, is a far better option. Nowadays, therapy is fast becoming an ideal anti-depressant rather than drugs. Switching of the brain is regarded as a new method for treating people with stroke and depression. Repeating certain mental exercises over and over again can make the neurons switch their activity from the emotional to the thinking area of the brain.

Learning to train that inner voice can be frustrating and tedious. However once done is worth it because you put your success beliefs and habits on autopilot. The root is belief, you must believe that you can do it! If you do not in the beginning you can borrow the beliefs of others who have done what you want to do. Each day you could choose one of my articles and study it, they tell the story of my journey through this process.
In the beginning when you become aware of what your inner voice is telling you and you realize that it may not a belief or habit that is doing you any good; you will know it is time to change. Start with something small. As a child I was told over and over and over again that I was clumsy. That belief was ingrained very deep in me and even to this day pops up occasionally, thank goodness it is a lot less often than it used to be. One specific thought that would come up was when I was walking down stairs; I would have the thought of falling and hurting myself. Now the voice that comes up when I am walking down stairs is “I am graceful and walk the stairs with ease”. Remember you cannot change all your bad habits at one time, start with one and be consistent.
In the center of your success is you, You are the product and you have to be responsible for your inner voice. In order to accomplish this you MUST be persistent. Saying things like the devil made me do it is just an excuse, ultimately it is you, your responsibility. No one can get inside your head and think your thoughts for you.
No one can make the decision to eat the second piece of chocolate cake but you.
As you master each new skill(s) new challenges will present themselves. But good for you because you have already mastered the first level therefore you have a good foundation on which to build the next one. Remember this is a process, just like learning how to walk you must go through all the steps. A shortcut will destroy your foundation In the rooting process.
Being skeptical is the sign of a champion. You can learn all the skills in the world, if you do not have the desire to win you will lose. This process is simple but it is not easy, you will be required to put in the work required.
