The job of a phlebotomist can best be described as encompassing the task of extracting the blood from the veins, arteries and the capillaries of the individuals and animals and storing and transporting them safely if required. The blood collection task is performed in order to screen the blood for the causes of physical or internal disorder or other cure related purposes.

In some of the cases, the phlebotomist may also be required to draw out other fluids from the body as well, according to the prescription and instructions of the professionals. The phlebotomists are required to extract the blood for collection purposes from the bodies of their patients in a manner which will minimize their discomfort and pain, while noting down any observations along with marking the specimens collected accordingly. An understanding of the laboratorial procedure and systems is important so that the specimen collected reaches its final destination in a safe manner and does not get mixed up, and allows ease of follow up for the others.

The phlebotomists are required to work under the surveillance or in association with the registered professionals when collecting blood and processing it for testing and screening purposes. In order to become a successful practicing phlebotomist one needs to undergo a skill based diploma that requires equivalent amount of theoretical studies of the human anatomy. Training and certification are empirical to be able to exercise as a phlebotomist. This diploma is not only limited to classroom studies but, involves extended practice based training sessions in which the phlebotomists may be required to complete tasks on actual patients under the surveillance of the professionals.
